Three Boys Join Hopeful Farm

When Bill of Stonewall Stable decided to reduce his operation, it piqued my interest. Stonewall Stable is known for its breeding operation, and I was hoping to add one or more of Bill's illustrious broodmares to Hopeful Farm's growing breeding program. The likes of Promised Land, Chatterbox, or Skyfinder are gems to any breeding program. But it seemed that Bill already had deals made with Rainbow for those broodmares and other fine stock.

Not to be discouraged, I started looking at some of his young fillies - the yearlings and foals. Hoping to at least get some potential future broodmares - if possible with Promised Land or Chatterbox in their pedigree.

However, no yearling or weanling fillies were to be found. However, we then came across the boys. And we couldn't stop admiring them. In the end we picked up 1 yearling and 2 weanling colts.

TRANSCRPITION
Memcay x Chatterbox
Weanling Colt
Mature to 17.3 hh

This tall colt comes from some of the best lines Photo Finish has to offer. In 2004 and 2005 Memcay dominated the turf tracks, and was named Champion Turf Horse and won the Breeder's Cup Endurance in both years. Winner of over $13 million in just 2 short years, Memcay is considered by many as the best endurance champion to date.

Also as the sire of our own champion 3 year old For You to Envy, we couldn't wait to add more Memcay blood to our stable.

Not to be outdone, Chatterbox also only raced in 2004 and 2005, but was crowned the Champion Female Turf in 2004 and 2005 and the Champion Older Female in 2005. She won the Breeders Cup Turf in 2004 and 2005. She has an amazing record of 20-11-7-1. Which means she ran 1st or 2nd an incredible 90% of the time.

This colt is expected to dominate on the turf tracks from 10 furlongs and up. Keep an eye out for him - He is one to watch.

OLD JACK
Kendane x Promised Land
Weanling Colt
Mature to 17.3 hh

This tall chestnut colt is out of one of the best 16 furlong mares that Photo Finish has ever seen. She raced almost exclusively at 16 furlongs winning the Melbourne Cup and Breeders Cup Endurance in 2006. Her oldest foal is the champion colt Daredevil who is the winner of over $8.5 million.

His sire is Kendane who had talent on the racetracks, but was mismanaged so his record is not as good as it could have been. However, he is proved as a sire with his son Count Kane who was the Eclipse Champion 2 Year Old Colt is 2011.

If this colt has Kendane's speed and Promised Land's stamina - he will be a monster on the tracks.

RUN ON SENTENCE
Memcay x Skyfinder
Yearling Colt
Mature to 15.3 hh

This colt is also by Memcay one of the greatest endurance champions Photo Finish has ever seen.

Skyfinder raced in 2004 and 2005 and was a good mare from 10 to 12 furlongs. She won just over $2 million in 23 starts, coming home with 7 wins, 7 seconds, and 4 thirds.

Skyfinder has done well in the breeding shed, with 2 of her foals winning over $1.5 million in lifetime earnings.

We have confidence that this colt will do well next year. He's another to keep your eye on on the turf tracks from 10 furlongs and up.

All in all we are happy with the colts that we purchased. We are hoping that they will become the future studs of Hopeful Farm. In the end, only time will tell if they were smart buys.

Perfection in the Triple Crown Chase

Since 2004, Hopeful Farm has tried to claim all three crowns of the Sprinter's Triple Crown - The Lightning Stakes (G1. 5 furlongs, turf), The Oakleigh Plate (G1 5.5 furlongs, turf), and the Newmarket Handicap (G1, 6 furlongs, turf). Three short and fast races - that nearly always have large fields and close finishes.

In the inaugural year in 2004, owner Chelsey T. sent out its rising sprinting champion Handsome Man. He came home the winner upsetting the likes of Bold N' Free who would later be named Co-Eclipse Sprinter of the Year. He would then placed 2nd in the Oakleigh Plate - behind Royal Dame - and 3rd in the Newmarket Handicap - Behind Royal Dame and Bold N' Free.

The following year, Handsome Man was ready again to bring home Triple Crown Glory. However, he fell just short of becoming the first Sprinter's Triple Crown winner. He won the Lightning Stakes for the second year in a row. And then came home with a win in the Oakleigh Plate ahead of Bold N' Free. However, he ran 4th in the Newmarket Handicap.

In 2006, Hopeful Farm had a speedy filly in Lady Kay who would become the dam of Count Kane. She would place a disapointing 5th. She had excellent speed, not enough stamina to race against the best.

In 2007 and 2008 Hopeful Farm did not have any quality G1 sprinters to send to the Triple Crown.

In 2009 Handsome Man's first foal crop was 3 years old and one colt was ready to avenge his father's defeat in the Newmarket Handicap. Handsome Problem was a huge upset by winning the Newmarket Handicap. Now Hopeful Farm won all three Triple Crown races... But now they needed a win by one horse in one year.

In 2011, Perfection another son of Handsome Man missed the Lightning Stakes - but was ready for the Oakleigh Plate and the Newmarket Handicap. He was running hard, but placed a driving 2nd place in the Oakleigh Plate that year. And would come home with the win in the Newmarket Handicap.

Like his sire, Handsome Man, trainer/owner Chelsey T. is hoping that he'll improve in his second try at the Sprinter's Triple Crown. This weekend Perfection is looking to begin his campagin to become the 3rd Sprinter's Triple Crown winner.

Perfection has a record of 5:4-0-0 with two major wins in the Dubai Golden Shaheen and the Yasuda Kinen. He is second on the Top 5-Year-Olds for 2012 behind Regal Son and he is 9th for Top 5-Year Olds Overall with only 13 starts.

He is facing 5 other horses, including Count Kane (Eclipse 2 Year Old, 2011) who was bred by Hopeful Farm and is the son of Lady Kay. He is a fantastic young sprinting horse who has a record of 5:3-1-0 for the season. He will be a major threat and one to watch since he'll get a weight break.

These two Hopeful Farm breds are looking to have a nice rivarly this year. Thus far, the standings are 1-1 with both colts coming home with 1 win apiece.

It'll be a great race this weekend, and Chelsey T says, "We are hopeful about Perfection's chances this weekend. As for Triple Crown glory... well ask me in a few weeks. It'll be a tough first race, and not just from "The Count." There are 5 other horses and all of them look to be tough at 5 furlongs."

Mid Year Report 2012

Racing Results
This past weekend ended the first half of the racing year for 2012. And as always I'd like to take a look back at how we have done thus far, and what the last half of the racing season might look like for Hopeful Farm.

Thus far we have a record of 41:8-9-7-5. With 19.5% wins, 22% seconds, 17.1% thirds, 58.5% on the board, and 70.7% in the money. The numbers are off our standard goal, but respectable based on the talent in our stable.

After our Annual Private Auction a few weeks ago, we have fine tuned our stable to some of our top prospects.
Hopeful Farm's Top Horses

Perfection is our leading racer and is preparing for the Sprinter's Triple Crown which starts this weekend in the Lightning Stakes (G1). Thus far only Count Kane owned by FDL Lodge and one of the colts we bred is entered to face him. This 3 year old colt will give Perfection a run for his money. Thus far the two stand with one win each in two starts against each other.

For You to Envy is our 3 year old colt who has never placed worse than 4th. He might not be among the best 3 year olds racing, but he can compete against them and hold his own. We are still trying to find an optimal distance for this colt. But he is always one to watch with a lifetime record of 11:5-2-3-1.

Bright futures are ahead for this two homebred colts.

Hopeful Farm's Honorable Mention

Disputatious is a 4 year old colt whose future at Hopeful Farm has been shaky. He has been on the "To Be Sold" List for some time now. We can't afford to expand our barn, so in order to make room for foals this winter - we need to thin our stock. However, this colt hasn't made a wrong move. He has a lifetime record of 16:3-6-1-2 and in his last start he posted his first PSR above 99 (coming in at 100) and his first win in a year. He is a solid racer who finishes in the money 75% of the time.

Pussy Cat Doll is our 4 year old filly that we purchased last year as a possible broodmare prospect. She has good stamina, but hasn't pulled off that win yet .She seems to have found a niche at around 11 furlongs on the turf tracks. She'll race again at 5 years of age at Hopeful Farm before we'll decide if she'll stick around as a broodmare.

Hopeful Farm's Top Young Prospects

Seduction is our 3 year old filly who is still immature. She raced once as a 2 year old and came in 4th and once this year and placed 3rd. She is a late bloomer, but like her half-brother Handsome Man and Handsome Man's son Perfection - we know that good things come to those who wait.

Then we have our group of 6 two year olds. All of whom are lightly raced, with one unraced colt, who are still learning the ropes. As a policy we don't race our 2 year old very much, and we look forward to watching these youngsters as they mature.

-----------

Our New Horses

So it a couple of impluse purchases we now have 4 new horses that we must find room for.

The first was a broodmare purchase from FDL Lodge with View of Paradise. When we saw this mare on the Buy It Now List for only $10,000 - it was a no brainer. And we purchased her without so much as a second thought. She is a fantastic addition to our broodmare band.

As a racer she frequently posted PSRs of 100+ and runs well on all surfaces. She will likely be bred to one of our stallions - Handsome Man or Perfect Picture - in her first season with us.

And we made a quick stop at Stonewall Stables to visit Bill to inquire about a pair of weanling colts and a yearling colt that he has for sale. We wanted to add some new blood to our stable, and while we were initally looking for some yearling fillies to purchase - we just kept coming back to look at those two weanling colts and yearling colt. They have some of the best lines that we could hope for, and they just have the look of champions.

We have informally agreed on purchase agreements, and all that is left to be done is some paperwork. And we will be coming home to Michigan with a few rowdy boys to add to the mix.

------------

What this Means

So our racing for the end of 2012 looks to be in good hands (or hooves) with the likes of Perfection, For You to Envy, and others.

However, now we are again looking at stall space to accomodate our new purchases and the coming foals for the 2012/2013 Breeding Season. We have a few options:

  • Sell More Horses
  • Lease Broodmares
  • Purchase Stalls

All three have their benefits, but we are leaning towards selling 1-3 more horses and leasing a few broodmares if it comes down to it.

Changes Abound at Hopeful Farm

In the past week, Hopeful Farm has sold 3 of its horses and is currently in talks with about 4 stables. With limited time, owner Chelsey T. thought that by downsizing her racing stock she could focus on providing a well-rounded schedule for the horses that remain racing for Hopeful Farm.

Thus, Discreet Inquiry a 4 year old colt was sold to Amanda of Bally Doyle Stables. Negotiations were quick as the two owners celebrated after the Preakness Stakes. This colt has excellent potential, and Chelsey has confidence that Amanda will be able to tap into it. "Amanda is an excellent trainer who knows how to handle horses. If you need any proof look at Reichenbach Falls. Bred and trained by Amanda - she knows what she is doing."

Also, a pair of two year olds were also sold - Veritas and Duceren to 4th Alarm Racing Stables and Hey Buddy Racing Stable, respectively. Both colts have excellent potential and should be watched in the future. Chelsey replied that, "Both are youngsters who are still finding their way around the ovals. They should improve steadily and could be a real threat in the future. Our only concern is the travel to Ireland and Greece."

However, in a rather impulse purchase - owner Chelsey T. purchased a broodmare from FDL Lodge - View of Paradise (pictured left).

This mare has a record of 28:4-7-8 with $1,161,100 in earnings. She had a very respectable racing career, when you factor that she raced only as a 2 and 3 year old.
"I believe that this mare will do well in Hopeful Farm's breeding program. She was an excellent sprinter on dirt and held up on the turf. As a racer she showed many excellent traits that we value in a broodmare. And at a steal of only $10,000 I couldn't pass up this mare.... Now I just have to expand my broodmare barn (again) before winter!"

Maryland's Envy

For You to Envy the 3 year old Memcay colt from Hopeful Farm arrived at Pimlico a few weeks ago. He's coming off a win in Kentucky - not the Derby but the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes. Having opted out of the Kentucky Derby - the black colt has been training for the shorter 1 3/16th mile race.
Owner and Breeder Chelsey T of Hopeful Farm was seen clocking a work by the small black colt. "He's been training well. And with 3 wins out of 4 tries he deserves a spot to run in the Preakness Stakes."
When asked why she by-passed the chance at Triple Crown victory Chelsey replied, "He's a top notch colt. But he ran a lack-luster race in the UAE Derby, and there is no point making him fall over himself trying to run in the Kentucky Derby. He's prepped and ready for the Preakness though."
Hopeful Farm has never had a Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes starter before - but in 2008 they won the Belmont Stakes with their mare Led Astray who upset Perfect Bell. They might not have a racer in every major race, but when Chelsey decides to enter a horse you can bet that they will be true contenders.
Look for the black colt in the black and white silks to upset again.

Kentucky Derby Restrictions

Should the Kentucky Derby (G1) and other major races (Triple Crown Races, Breeder's Cup, Dubai Meeting, Hong Kong Meeting) of the year have some restrictions on the entries?

As the entries currently stand, there are a few very questionable entries.

[DISCLAIMER: It is the owner's decision to enter their horses as they would like. I'm not trying to single anyone out and I am sorry if someone does get offended. But you have your choice where to place your horses... I have my right to speak my opinion.]

For example:

Spanish Warrior has NEVER beat another horse to the finish line. In 5 starts he has run dead last in every race. His PSRS have been 11, -51, 0, -25, and 40. That's an average of -5 per start. What has this colt done to prove that he will run anything but dead last in the Kentucky Derby?

Demon Within has a record of 7:0-0-0-0 and in his last two races he's placed 7th of 7 starters. This colt is clearly not going to run in the money. The only way he'll contribute to this race is if he blocks a horse that has proved him/herself to be a legitamate Derby starter.

Then you have other horses that have found some success among UG/G3 stakes races. But does that really make them Derby contenders?

If there isn't a rule added to limit the quality of entries in the major races - perhaps then more than 2% of the purse should be needed to start a horse. $20,000 is a minimal price for most stables to pay for a $1 million race like the Kentucky Derby. What if perhaps 10% of the purse was required to enter a horse. It would then cost owners $100,000 to enter their horse in a race like the Kentucky Derby.

Owners can still decide to enter their horse in a race like the Kentucky Derby, but it will cost them a lot more and hopefully make them think twice. I just hate to see a potential winner be blocked and then run off the board because of it.

Roanoke is a 2 year old colt by Congenial and out of Grinder's Daughter and has been recently listed for at the BUY IT NOW on the Sales Page for the low price of $5,000. At $5,000 this colt is sure to win back his tag and could be a good investment given time.

UAE Derby Preview

At Nad Al Sheba comes one of the biggest prep races for the Kentucky Derby - the United Arab Emirates Derby over 10 furlongs for a purse of $2 million. A small but talented field of 8 will make their way to the starting gate.

Autharky
Owner: Rainbow
Breeder: Establos Del Castillo

By Take a Gander out of El Condor Lady
Earnings: $2,568,600
Record: 10: 6-2-1

This colt is rightly the early favorite to win the UAE Derby. He is coming off a big win in the Kyodo News Service Hai (G3) over top 3 year old colts Tony Montana (Golden Acres) and Capro Espiatorio (Olmo Dorato). He showed good speed and stamina in his last time out. He will be fresh and ready for the 10 furlongs at the UAE Derby. Expect to see him out of the gate fast and in the lead early. He is the one to beat.

Beauty Queen
Owner: Eureka Racing Stables
Breeder: Eureka Racing Stables
By Handsome Man out of Awesome Find
Earnings: $2,242,500
Record: 10:8-2

This Eclipse 2 Year Old Champion and Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies winner is looking to prove herself against the boys at the classic distances. She is coming off an upset lost in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) to For You to Envy. But this filly is not to be discounted. Before her lost she had an 8 race win streak from 5 - 8.5 furlongs. She hasn't raced past 8.5 furlongs, but should be able to race well at 10 furlongs.

For You to Envy
Owner: Hopeful Farm
Breeder: Hopeful Farm

By Memcay out of Grinder's Daughter
Earnings: $278,000
Record: 7:4-2-1

This colt has been lightly raced and was an unknown before this season. But he has started this season with 2 impressive wins at 8.5 furlongs. This colt showed his speed in the Heatherlie Handicap winning in track record time, and showed he has what it takes to win against G1 competition by beating Beauty Queen in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2). He hasn't raced past 8.5 furlongs which is a concern. He is a promising colt, but his true talent will be tested this weekend. He could show another upset this weekend, but we wonder if he has the speed and stamina for this tough field over 10 furlongs.

Koh Samui
Owner: Port Pirie Racing
Breeder: Port Pirie Racing
By Tennis out of Kathy
Earnings: $17,400
Record: 3:1-0-0

This lightly raced colt is from the esteemed stables of Port Pirie Racing. He is making a huge jump in class in this race. His last start was a win in the Maiden race over 8 furlongs on dirt. But it was a very impressive win. He won by over 6 1/2 length in track record time and was never extended. He came back very fresh and showed signs that he could race beyond 8 furlongs. He has talent, but he is very lightly raced and not much is known about this youngster. However, his last start was impressive. Watch for him in the stretch - he could be moving fast.

Rightwing
Owner: Chiquita Lodge
Breeder: Chiquita Lodge
By Nightwing out of Inside Information
Earnings: $110,000
Record: 4:1-0-1

This colt is another very lightly raced colt. In his only start this year he placed 3rd in the Hutchenson Stakes (G2). He fell back early in the short 7 furlong race, and ran out of distance before he could make it up. While this colt will do better at longer distances, we wonder if he has the class and stamina to finish on the board in this talented field.

Soviet Troll
Owner: Goforwand Stables
Breeder: Goforwand Stables

By Troll Tower out of Soviet Victory
Earnings: $383,200
Record: 4:2-1-0

This colt finished 2nd in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Colts last year behind Believer. In his only start this year he placed off the board in the Risen Star Stakes (G3). This colt is another very lightly raced 3 year old. This colt has fast early speed, and he will probably be out of the gate fast and battling for first early in the race. But if he has the stamina to last the full 10 furlongs is under debate.

Trump Mahal
Owner: FDL Lodge
Breeder: FDL Lodge
By Smart Money out of All for Camena
Earnings: $170,750
Record: 11:1-2-1

In his last start this colt placed 4th in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) behind For You to Envy and Beauty Queen. This colt ran well in the first half of the race, but couldn't sustain his speed for the final drive. He will be up in the front early in the race, but like some others wonder if he has the stamina to finish the full 10 furlongs.
Twin Towers
Owner: Olmo Dorato
Breeder: Chiquita Lodge

By Troll Tower out of Miss Gold
Earnings: $366,000
Record: 8:2-3-0
In his last start Twin Towers won the Risen Star Stakes (G3) after coming from nearly 17 lengths off the lead to win in a fantastic final drive to the finish. He showed excellent speed winning from well off the pace and navigating around the pack to finish first. Although, in his race he will have to work hard to make up that much ground to the early leaders. He will be moving late in the race.
Our Top 4 Picks:
(In ABC Order)
  • Autharky - Shows speed, stamina, and class. Is one of the best 3 year olds around. Favorite to win.
  • Beauty Queen - Is a top filly with excellent speed. If she has the stamina she'll be a major threat.
  • For You to Envy - Has talent to win. Stamina under question.
  • Koh Samui - Lightly raced colt enters unnoticed. Showed excellent signs in last race. Could be a threat.
Should be an excellent race. Have a lot of early speed in this race to challenge Autharky- with a lot of closers that could upset the colt.

For You to Envy Shipped to Dubai

For You to Envy was training at Gulfstream Park until a few days ago. Many thought that he would be an entry in the Florida Derby (G1) a major East Coast prep race for the Kentucky Derby. However, coming late to Nad Al Sheba the black colt from Hopeful Farm was spotted in an early morning training session.

Chelsey, owner and trainer of Hopeful Farm, was already at Nad Al Sheba with their sprinting 5 year old colt Perfection who is slated to run in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1). But everyone was surprised when the barn's rising 3 year old colt walked off the plane.

The small colt galloped 8 furlongs and looks fresh and on his toes despite the long journey to Dubai. He is coming off a big win at Gulfstream Park when he was the upset winner beating the Eclipse 2 Year Old Filly Beauty Queen (Eureka Racing Stables) in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) over 8.5 furlongs.

After For You to Envy's workout, Chelsey said, "We have been debating sending For You to Envy to either the Florida Derby or the UAE Derby. We thought that in his last race he deserved the chance to race against the very best. He has done everything we have asked so far and is improving with every race."

The field will be a tough one for the lightly raced colt. Beauty Queen was also shipped to Dubai in the last few days from Florida. And the top Kentucky Derby prospect Autharky of Rainbow has been training at Nad Al Sheba since his big win at Kyodo News Service Hai (G3) beating top colts Tony Montana and Capro Espiatorio.

But Chelsey is not known for ducking the top horses, she said, "Yes, we would have a better chance of winning For You to Envy raced in the Florida Derby. He'd face a smaller and an easier field and would stand a very good chance of winning. However, in his last two starts he has showed us that he is ready for tougher competition. And besides, what's the fun in ducking the big names of racing?"

It will be a very tough race for the Hopeful Farm colt. He will be racing at 10 furlongs for the first time, and be facing some of the fastest and classiest competition of his short career. But if he does well in this race, you can bet that this colt will be in Kentucky in May.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An Extra Note:

Sorry there haven't been many updates to the blog or the website, but finals are very time consuming (who would have thought??). But after Tuesday, expect regular updates again!

Thanks for reading,
Chelsey

Perfection Tops Tokyo

Perfection the rising 5 year old colt at Hopeful Farm proved that he is an emerging sprinting champion winning easily in wire to wire fashion in the Negishi Stakes this weekend. In his debut race for 2012 he proved to all doubters that despite his off the board finish at the Breeders Cup Mile last year - he is a real contender in the sprinting circuit.

He broke well from the outside post position and with a quick spurt was clear of the field. The jockey having instructions to get the colt out early, to avoid any traffic problems from coming from an outside post position.

Perfection held his lead throughout the race, and was not fully extended in his race. Hopeful Farm's contract jockey, John Lyon, was astride Perfection and after the race said, "The only time I had to push him was at the beginning of the race. We didn't want to get caught behind horses, so we went for the lead right out of the gate. But he was running easily and well within himself throughout the race."

John Lyon has been the jockey for all of Hopeful Farm's champion racers - including Perfection's sire Handsome Man, and champion older 1/2 brother Perfect Picture. Owner and trainer of Perfection said, "We expect great things from this colt this year. He's primed and ready for a big season."

Tentatively, Perfection is scheduled to race in the G1 Vic Health Cup in Caulfield at the end of the month. If he races, Perfection will be facing another Hopeful Farm bred colt Count Kane - who is owned by FDL Lodge and was last year's Eclipse Champion 2 Year Old.

Chelsey said about the young colt, "Count Kane is a fantastic 3 year old colt. He is an emerging sprinting champion and will go far under the tutelage of Mr. Lafleur."

When pressed to answer how the outcome of the Vic Health Cup might turn out she explained, "These colts are very different, but both possess great talent. Perfection is a 5 year old who hasn't had a lot of early succes; whereas, Count Kane was ready and proven very early in his career. At this point, I believe that Perfection is the faster of the two - but Count Kane will get a break in the weights which could be the deciding factor. As the entries stand now, I believe that they will run 1-2 in the Vic Health Cup... regardless of who comes out on top the staff at Hopeful Farm will be cheering both Hopeful Farm bred colts on."
